dc.description.abstractThe principal objective of this project is to strengthen already existing collaborations between the members - representing the four countries Argentina, Brazil, Chile and France - of this project and to develop new interactions between them and their institutions, especially between Ph.D. students (or young researchers) and the senior members of the project. As a consequence we expect to make highly relevant contributions to the rapidly growing mathematical theory of symbolic dynamics and tiling systems. A second important goal is to promote the area of symbolic dynamics and tiling systems in South America by spreading knowledge and results with the particular aim of interesting Young mathematicians (graduate and doctoral students, post-docs) to these areas which should lead to an increase in strength and numbers and to a long-term sustainability of this particular subfield of dynamical systems. In the course of this project we also aim to develop packages adding new functionalities in particular for the study of cellular automata, subshifts and tiling systems to the open source mathematical software project SAGE. Several members already have developed skills and acquired technical experience with SAGE and they will share their knowledge in order to extend SAGE in the direction of symbolic dynamics in its broadest sense.
